I'm back at Cornell, finishing my Ph.D. Amen...
On 7 Dec 2003, I was deployed for an overseas combat tour within the Area of Operations of the US Central Command, and remained mobilized throughout 2004 and well into 2005. While serving in my active-duty ground infantry role, I was placed on official military leave of absence from Cornell's Department of Physics. On Thursday, 22 July 2004, I was awarded the Combat Infantryman Badge (CIB), a coveted badge denoting direct infantry engagement in combat, for actions in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF). A series of photographs depict my time in country.
I'm a sixth-year doctoral candidate in theoretical condensed-matter physics in the Arias Research Group, part of the Laboratory for Atomic and Solid-State Physics at Cornell University. In addition to my physics research work, I maintain diverse avocations in military history and practice, educational initiatives, and free software and modern hardware architectures. I also enjoy the occasional outdoor pursuit and hope to again find time to return to general aviation flying (so far, I've done solo x-country in a Piper Cherokee Arrow). I've also recently started pursuing ham radio (partially for the benefits of commo practice as a crucial skill of any unit team member), planning to soon obtain the full frequency benefits of an Amateur Extra license through the FCC.
